Own ~ Five Minute Friday

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV)

A Good Friday Poem:
The Cross is Ours to Own

The day is gray and gloomy, yet
Somehow it feels just right
To sit in contemplation
Of the day they killed The Light

A day darker than all the rest
But still we call it Good
Because Jesus died for us
As only a Savior would

We often want to forget that part
It is so hard to realize
Not Him but we should have hung there
For all to mock and despise

Truth is nailed there before us
The sin is ours alone
We may often try to deny it
But the cross is ours to own

Each crack of the whip
Torn flesh from the crown
Every strike of the hammer
His blood dripping down

The pain He endured
Swords thrust in His side
The anguish and despair
As His world did divide

We should be the ones
Who died on that tree
But “It is finished,” He said
Now from sin we are set free

A plan from the very beginning
His love on a cross of wood
A day where transgression passed away
And today we DO see it is Good

“Truth is nailed there before us.” This line so stood out. May I always remember He is the truth, the way, and the life. His Word is truth. And Easter is a reminder for us all that His truth is eternal. Beautiful post, Cindy. May you and your family have a blessed Easter!

    Great job!

The words that rise and flow in you
    stand tall to be compared
with poets great and very few,
and best of all, you’ve shared
them here with us in this small space,
    a shining time, a gift
of wisdom and God’s smiling grace
to give our hearts a lift.
I hope that, sister, you’ll Write On
(does that not have a Sixties ring?),
for in your stanzas there’s a dawn
    of understanding few can bring
to all of us out here who read
your words, and there find what we need.

We do want to claim the blood of Jesus to wash our sin away, but I, for one, can’t read the details of the crucifixion. I know it’s the truth. I believe it was the only way. But I fast forward through the story. We went to see The Passion of the Christ. I should have saved my money. I spent the entire length of the show looking at the back of the seat in front of me.

Well written, Cindy. You handled a be tragic event with grace..

Jane I am the same way. I can hardly stand the thought of any of it normally, but for some reason I was drawn to just sit in the pain and agony on this Good Friday and that’s when the question came to me, “Do you own what Jesus went through for you?” Makes it worse to accept responsibility for His punishment but also makes the gift that much more amazing! Thank you for your thoughts. They mean more than you know. I hope you had a lovely, meaningful Easter.

What a beautiful poem on Jesus’ resurrection. I admire poetry writers like yourself. It’s a skill I wished I had. Keep writing beautiful poetry.

Thank you for your kind words Lisa. My brain kinda just works in rhyme. I think it’s from many years of teaching Second Graders. 😉 I appreciate you taking your time to comment.
