Inspired Comfort

“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” 2 Corinthians 1:4 (NLT) / Pixabay

Being a teacher, mom, and now MiMi, I’ve learned one important lesson when it comes to comfort: a cool cloth and a bandaid do wonders for a hurting child. Whether you can see the mark or not, they feel injured and so, the act of offering a remedy and reassurance goes a long way in quieting a little one’s fears and easing their pain. Often, in the end, the child wears the bandaid  proudly like a medal, proving to others that while discomfort had threatened to overtake them, they’d come out victorious, battle scars and all!

Comfort for us adults is a little more complicated.  We’re experts in walking wounded with no visible signs for those around us to know we are in need of reassurance.  In those times of distress, when our fears and heartache jeopardize our well being, we too, long for a remedy. Unfortunately, a cool cloth and bandaid usually won’t do the trick** but the world is very willing to offer us way too many other options for a quick fix. It’s important that we remind ourselves that to quiet our fears and ease our pain, the first thing we need to do is go is the inspired Word of God. There’s no doubt that this life WILL leave us with battle scars; but in the midst of His comfort, we’re assured we won’t be overtaken. In the end, we’re promised there’ll come a day with no more pain and suffering and that’s when we will find ourselves to be truly victorious.

Rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn with those who mourn. Romans 12:15 (NIV)
