Persist ~ Five Minute Friday

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” Matthew 6:34 (NLT)

Look at the Birds

Every single feeder is down and yet, they persist……….

At first, only a couple appeared.  I didn’t think much of it. They were entertaining and I welcomed their colorful plumage. It didn’t appear that they would bother anything. Was I ever wrong!

For days I’ve watched the two grow into 20 plus! A flock of blue jays that just won’t go away. Oh, I’ve tried baffled feeders, wired-cage feeders, upside-down suet feeders, and they conquered them all. Not only did they consume a great deal of seed, their bullying personalities and frenetic antics within the branches of the tree discourage my “more desirable” bird friends from visiting anymore. They even scared off sparrows with their constant noise and overwhelming number who were trying to settle into the bird house .

Finally, it became clear that I had no choice but to remove every feeder that was drawing them in. It wasn’t an easy decision. If you know me at all, you are aware how much my birds mean to me. And you know what? Those overwhelming visitors have continued to come back several times a day to see if I’ve given in to their unyielding ways and put the feeders back up.

Blue jays aren’t the only thing that move in here and take over. Worried thoughts can overrun my mind, too. Maybe you can relate. One or two casually slip in. I don’t think much of it. Anything but dull, I find myself entertaining their presence convinced it won’t hurt anything. I was wrong about the blue jays and I’ve been very wrong about worrying, too!

Over the years I’ve learned that like Lays Potato Chips you can’t stop at just a few. Once your imagination feeds worry, a few turn into many, consuming more of life than you ever wanted. Anxious thoughts bully us into thinking they are right and the more they bounce around in our brains, reasonable thoughts make their way in less and less until we are overwhelmed and give in to fear.

A bill bigger than the balance in our checkbook. A symptom that signals something is wrong. A fight that has fractured a friendship. The list goes on and on. They swoop in, we take notice. The noise in our heads and hearts grows. The scenarios and seeming challenges multiply. Everything we try to rid ourselves of those overwrought thoughts is unsuccessful and we find ourselves far from settled.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
Psalm 139 23-24 (NLT)

Here’s the thing, I can’t pick and choose which birds and how many come to my feeders and we certainly can’t always control the circumstances of life, but, we can do something about the thoughts we allow to persist, and the Good News? We don’t have to do it on our own!

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT)

When we nourish our worries, the longer they’re apt to stay. But when we “take down the feeders,” and instead focus on God through prayer, worship, and reading scripture, we’ll see less and less of them swooping in. Will they come back to see if we’ll give in to them? Probably, but if they don’t find the conditions favorable they won’t stay nearly as long.

That’s just what I’m hoping will happen with those pesky blue jays too. When they find nothing to feed on and are being chased off before they can settle in, I’m counting on those unwanted feathered pests to finally move on. And those fear-filled pests? The same goes for them. How? Well, by looking at the birds…..

“Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dresses as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?” Matthew 6:26-30 (NLT)

AND by putting our faith in the One who persistently cares more for us than anything else He’s ever created.

Day 18: Little

31 Days of Five Minute Friday Free Writes

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.”
2 Thessalonians 3:16 (NIV)

Day 18: Little

Not long ago, on a fall get-away and a whim, we turned into the parking lot of the “Smallest Church in 48 States.” Stepping into the tiny sanctuary, such a sense of God’s presence immediately permeated my soul. There was a reverent silence within those walls. Soft light filtered through the stained glass windows creating a red glow that flowed across the floor at the alter beneath the cross. A coincidence? I think not. Sitting in a miniature pew I felt God’s peace saturate all of that little space.

Experiencing God’s presence and peace in my “normal-sized” church happens regularly. Standing in the shadow of a large mountain, at the edge of the vast ocean, or amongst a sweeping forest, I expect to sense God there in the midst of his grand design. But, in a roadside attraction touting its small size? Encountering our BIG God there, took me by surprise.

I’m afraid I’ve been shortsighted in the same way before. When going through major happenings in life (many that throw us for a loop) I take those big cares right to God. After all, He is the no height, width, breadth, depth, east from west God! But, when it comes to little things? I’ve questioned whether our omniscient, omnipotent God has time for those. Things like my lost keys, a stomach ache, vacation plans, missing birds from my feeders, car trouble, or a multitude of other minute details. Maybe you’ve wondered too? Here’s what I’m learning:

“Do not be anxious about anything; but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Philippians 4:6 (NIV emphasis mine)

Did you catch that? Paul teaches us not to worry, and I’m going to add not to wonder, about anything. And he says, instead take everything, tremendous and tiny, to God in prayer. Isn’t that amazing? We expect God to listen to our monumental needs, but our little ones? That can take us by surprise. But, when we think about it, it really shouldn’t because after all, Jesus came as a little baby, He compared faith with a grain of mustard seed, fed the five thousand with meager loaves and fish, and used a widow and her two small mites as an example of commendable giving. He is the last is first, poor is rich, least is great, God! And it doesn’t stop there:

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:7 (NIV)

I love how God works? My experience with Him in the “Smallest Church in 48 States” has reminded me, and I hope you too, that He meets us anywhere about anything. Big or little, God invites us to turn to Him not on a whim, but in prayer and thanksgiving. And when we step into His presence? We will feel God’s peace saturate every little space of our being.

Tired ~ Write 28 Day Challenge

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

Tired

Meet Jinx, one of our neighborhood vagabond cats. Well, that was my name for him when he’d stop by. He was especially attracted to my bird feeders. There he’d sit, poised for action, head raised, still as a statue, focused, and that’s where he’d stay for most of his visit. It was evident Jinx felt in control of the situation. He’d keep an eye on everything around him, anticipating, thinking he was ready for whatever flew his way. The birds however, felt differently and after a while, Jinx would tire of standing guard and seek out a sunny spot to rest.

Oh my, how I’m a lot like Jinx! Always on alert, I too keep close watch on those around me. With my mind roused by what I imagine, I create scenarios of how I might need to be prepared to act. I actually fool myself into believing I have some sort of control and feel ready for whatever comes my way. Life however, feels differently. Honestly, “rehearsing disaster” and always being on guard is just exhausting. I’m tired of spending my days (and nights) that way. Any other “Jinxes” out there?

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” Psalm 91:1-2 (NLT)

We know that troubles can swoop in on us at any time. The Psalmist is reminding us that we don’t have to let it, or the anticipation of it, leave us frozen in place. We’re not alone. We have someone to go to, our Refuge. Trusting God allows us to release our worry and find rest.

“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Matthew 11:29

I don’t know about you, but I’m still learning this lesson. What I am beginning to understand, is that the longer I live, and I hope the same is true for you, the more we experience what the Psalmist knew and shared. And, Ole Jinx? He prompts us to remember that when we step away from what burdens us, and seek out the Son, that’s where we’ll find a place of rest for our souls.

Skipping Ahead

“The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8 (NASB)

Skipping Ahead

Have you ever been reading a book that’s so exciting or mysterious, you can’t wait to see how it ends and so, you skip ahead and read the ending before you’ve actually read the rest of story? I must admit, I’ve been guilty of fast-forwarding to the end a time or two myself; but, what I’m  really guilty of, is creating endings to my own life stories before any of the other pages have been written. For example:

Genre: Chick Lit- Scene one: A friend doesn’t respond to my text message when I think she should. So,
I quickly flip to the back of “my” book: I’ve done something to make my friend mad or hurt her feelings, and now, she doesn’t want to talk to me, maybe our friendship is over! Cue the regret!

Yep, I automatically skip over the “pages” that may tell of her busy schedule, that her phone died, or maybe she’s not feeling well.

~~~~~~~~~
Genre: Travel- Scene One:  I’m about to drive alone on a several hour trip. So,
Before leaving, I fan the pages to get to “my” ending of the story:  which may include a flat tire, being lost, or getting in an accident! Cue the anxiety!
You guessed it, I fail to consider the parts I’ve missed that get me to my destination on time and in one piece after a pleasant journey.
~~~~~~~~~

Genre: Health/Wellness- Scene One: As hard as I try to contain it, a cough escapes from my lips. So,
I immediately open that back cover to get to “my” conclusion of this volume: I have COVID, I could get a severe case, and what if I infect those I love! Cue the panic!

Once again, I’ve jumped over the details that tell about other causes of coughing like allergies, dust in the air, or just a plain, old tickle in the throat.

~~~~~~~~~
As you can see, I am an author of endings. In the story of my life, I’m sure I know what’s going to happen before it’s ever played out and so I skip ahead. You may have already noticed this, but when I get there? It’s rarely ever a happy ending either. You, and yes, even I know, that  jumping ahead to dire conclusions only leads to unnecessary worry and precious time being wasted.
“So do not worry about tomorrow; it will have enough worries of its own. There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings.” Matthew 6:34 (GNT)
“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” Matthew 6:27 (NLT)
Jesus, the true Author and Perfecter of our faith, is saying to me, and maybe you too, that we need to stop borrowing trouble and creating unnecessary anguish.  Instead we are instructed:
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT)
Turn our worry into prayer! Oh, how I need these verses under normal circumstances, but especially in the uncertain times we’re facing today! As much as we’d like to, we have no way of knowing what life will bring our way. The truth is, letting our (my) imaginations run wild with plot twists leaves out the most important thing. God is in control, of every word, line, and chapter of our days.  So, the challenge for me today, and maybe I’m not alone, is to once and for all, let go of ” our pen” and  begin to fully live the story He is writing.  After all, He is the One who writes THE happy ending!
“I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, ‘Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.’ ” Revelation 21:3-4 (NLT)
Cue the everlasting peace!
I’m joining the folks over at http://www.fiveminutefriday.com today, writing to the prompt “Ahead” . I’ve already read a few of the offerings and I urge you to click over and read them, too! As always, I’m grateful for your presence here.  I pray the scriptures today are as much an encouragement to you as they are to me.
Looking Back~Share Four Somethings
Labor Day weekend is upon us! How can it be that we’re already looking back on August? I don’t know about you, but for me this summer has passed in a blink of an eye! One good thing about month’s end though, is joining with others at http://www.heathergerwing.com to look back at our Four Somethings.  It also just so happens that today’s prompt at http://www.fiveminutefriday.com is “Back” thus, I’ve decided to do double duty with this post.  So sit “back” and relax as I share a bit of my month with you. And then…I’d LOVE for you to share your Four Somethings with me in the comments.  Here are mine:
Something Loved
“Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.” Philippians 1:3 (NLT)
My heart’s been happy this month because I’ve been able to spend time with some of my favorite people in some of my favorite places! It’s always an adventure when I’m with my grandsons. Just after this photo was taken the entire jug of bubbles spilled onto the patio. I immediately got the hose to spray it off but looking back now, I realize it wasn’t my best idea.  I’ll just leave it to your imagination to figure out what happened next!
I’ve recently returned from a trip back to Michigan to visit my mom and sisters.  We aren’t able to get together as often as we’d like, so each visit is a true blessing. There’s something special about being with those who’ve known you the longest and love you anyway! Whether it’s spending time watching my grands growing up or spending time with those I grew up with, I’ve loved making memories that I’ll now look back on and treasure!
Something Said
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Philippians 4:6 (NLT) / Pixabay
There are several things about myself that I’m working on to change. One big one is the amount of time I spend worrying. Looking back, I’ve realize just how much time I’ve wasted “rehearsing disaster” that’s never happened! As I’ve already said, time slips by in an instant and I don’t want to spend what I have on worthless worry.  It’s time for a wake up call!
I love it when right at a time I need them, just the right words are shared. How appropriate that my need for a wake up was met with words said about an alarm clock! I’d never thought to compare worry to an alarm clock but it resonates with me and maybe it will with you, too. The idea is that we can let our worry work as an alarm clock, warning us that there’s something we need to pray about.  AND…..we certainly don’t let an alarm clock keep ringing once it’s done its job of getting us up, so we shouldn’t let the worry alarm keep ringing after we’ve taken our concerns to God, either. I love that visual and hope to apply it from here on out and to not go back to letting worry take up all my time!
Something Learned
“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.” Ecclesiastes 4:9 (NLT)
What a great time I had this month working along side my daughter while learning to do something new! We were invited to attend a workshop at a new shop being opened by our family friends called “Board and Brush”. It’s a wonderful place where you can go to created fun and unique decor projects from scratch!  We learned how to assemble, distress, stain, and stencil. I was so thankful for the support and encouragement I received to help me complete my sign. The experience was so enjoyable that I hope we can go back and do it all again very soon!
Something Read
“Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” 1 Peter 4:9-10 (NLT)
Oh this book! Through stories of her homes, gardens, communities, friends, and family Christie Purifoy creates images of place and home which inspired me to reflect on the places that have contributed to bringing me where I am and helped create who I am. The emotions she shares and the knowledge she offers create a symphony of words and thought that made it hard for me to take my eyes from the page.  The subtitle: “Cultivating Places of Comfort, Beauty, and Peace” is exactly what this book does for the reader! If you desire to stay in the home you have, long for a home from your past, or dream of a new home in the future, this book is perfect for you! With her beautiful writing style (and beautiful it is….I might have a tiny or not so tiny case of writer’s envy) Christie takes us on a spiritual journey which reminded me that no matter where it is, God’s gift of home is meant to be shared. “Placemaker” is a book that I could read from front cover to back again and again and learn something new each time! I loved it!
Well there it is!  August was a good month but I must admit I am looking forward to September bringing some cooler weather and the introduction of Fall with it.  As you look back on this past month, I hope you too, can see many blessings.  Don’t forget to share a few of them with us! God willing we can share our September Four Somethings too so…….
Y’all come “back” now! Ya hear?
(sorry, just couldn’t resist)
Distant Memory ~ Five Minute Friday
“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” Matthew 6:27 (NLT)
Distant Memory
Standing in the spot from where this picture was taken, if you squint your eyes and look intently, you may be able to make out the row of windmills that line the ridge of the most distant mountain. And if the atmosphere is just right, though they’re miles away, you can sometimes even see their blades whirling and swirling as they work to capture energy from the wind.
Would it surprise you if I said that there have been times in my life when I’ve been stuck in that very spot? Oh, not physically, but rather, emotionally. You see, as much as I hate to admit it, I’m a worrier! I can be “lying down in green pastures” but instead of appreciating where I am, I’m looking off into the distant future, squinting my mind’s eye, and focusing intently on what may or may not happen down the road. My fears whirl, twirl, and churn a mile a minute and those anxious thoughts capture my energy, leaving me exhausted! Maybe you’re a little like that sometimes, too. So what’s a “windmill of worry” to do?
Plug into the One and Only True Power Source, of course!
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your request to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7(NIV)
“I look up to the mountains- does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!” Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)
How do we plug into God’s power? It’s all about where we’re looking, isn’t it? We need to begin to ask ourselves if we’re focusing on the mountains of potential problems we’ve created or is our focal point the Creator of all, who offers peace in every situation? I’m pretty sure we all know what we should answer and I wish I could say that I’ve reached the point in life where worry no longer demands my attention. I can’t. But, what I can tell you is that I’m not stuck gazing into the distance anymore. Through prayer and study, God is helping me and he’ll help you too, to more quickly recognize when anxious thoughts begin to spin out of control so that we can capture them before being completely blown off course. To “not be anxious about anything” is a process.  A process of trust. A process of prayer. A process of turning to God again and again and again… until that glorious day when finally, worrying will be nothing more than a distant memory!
It’s not Friday and I wrote for longer than five minutes, but I’m still linking up with the talented writers at http://www.fiveminutefriday.com
My hope for this blog has always been connection between you the reader and me; to help each other as we walk this journey. So, I would love to hear how you deal with times of worry in your life. If you feel led, please share your thoughts with me and others in the comments.  And I encourage you to click over and read what others have had to say about this week’s prompt “distant”.
It is what it is
What will be, will be.
You can’t change it now,
No need to worry.
Turn off your mind.
Close your eyes.
Tomorrow’s a new day,
The sun will rise.
Say your prayers,
Release your fear.
