Waste ~ Five Minute Friday

You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.'” 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT)

Dive Bomber

I’ve probably written these words before, but it continuously amazes me how much bird behavior can mirror the way we humans act. One of the frustrating parts about feeding hummingbirds is having what I call a “dive bomber.” You can usually hear them before you see them. They are the ones who sit just above the feeder and then whiz in to chase any other hummingbird away from the waiting nectar, even though there’s plenty to go around.

Every summer I see the same thing happen, there’s room for six guests around the feeder but five remain empty because one hummer doesn’t want to share. The result? A lot of wasted nectar. Just because it wants it all, doesn’t mean it can use it all. And so, the sweet liquid spoils, leaving me no option but to throw it out and begin again. Maybe you can tell I’m gritting my teeth as I type. Like I said, frustrating!

But isn’t this just how we can be with our money, our time, and our talents? We see others around who can benefit from some of what we have, yet we maneuver around so they don’t get more than we want them to. I know I’ve been a “dive bomber” more than I want to admit. I’m reminded of one of the parables Jesus told. He said,

“Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’ Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’
“Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
Luke 12: 15-21 (NLT)

I can find lots of reasons to store up my own “goods.” I may tell myself that someone else will surely provide, that the need isn’t as real as it appears, or even worry that if I give some of what I have, it will leave me lacking just like my selfish hummingbird or the rich farmer who also wanted it all for themselves. Maybe you can relate. Sure, some concerns are valid, BUT, we can’t let them stop us from doing what we know we should.

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT)

Spoiled sugar water, untimely death, moths and rust and thieves…do you, like I do, see a pattern here? The more we try to tightly hold on to, the more it wastes away. And our hearts? Well, they are left poverty stricken. I wonder if God ever finds our “dive bombing” behavior frustrating too? After all, He provides plenty to go around. Lucky for us, I’m pretty sure He is not as easily aggravated as I am!

I don’t know about you, but I often need reminded, that our wealth doesn’t come from the things of this world. Jesus gave absolutely everything He had for you and me and when the desire of our hearts is to share His gift with others, yes, through our money, our time, and our talents, that’s when we waste nothing and discover we truly have it all.

“And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.”
Hebrews 13:16 (NLT)

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26 (NIV)

Saver of Treasure

“I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold
I’d rather be His than have riches untold
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or land
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand

Than to be the king of a vast domain
And be held in sin’s dread sway
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today
~I’d Rather Have Jesus~

I’m a saver. Not so much of “stuff,” but rather of memories…cards, letters, photographs, drawings, newspaper articles…you get the idea. Somewhere along the way, I began tucking my most precious keepsakes into my Bible to preserve them. It seemed like a great place at first. But as time passed, it became so full of treasures that it was impossible to effectively use my Bible anymore. So instead of opening it regularly to study, there it sat, stuffed full, closed on the table. Those cherished bits and pieces slid between the pages of God’s Word now assumed a more important place than, well, God’s Word.

Isn’t that what can happen in life too? We are savers of what’s important to us…money, status, followers, our appearance, our homes, our skills…or a multitude of other things. We fill our days protecting these things until we become so crammed full of the world, that our hearts are closed off to what’s really important. We’ve placed so much between ourselves and our relationship with God, that we’ve allowed those things to assume a more influential role in our lives than, well, God.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)

So, where is my heart? Where’s yours? Clinging tightly to the past? Working hard at all cost? Desiring more money, attention, or possessions? Obsessed with coming in first, keeping up with others, or always being right? Jesus tells us in the verses above that these worldly “treasures” are temporary, here today and gone tomorrow. Filling all the spaces of our lives with them just leaves our hearts ineffective and closed off just like my Bible sitting on a table.

I am glad to say that I finally decided to stop stuffing my treasures into that Bible. I put it away and got a new one so that now, I can be a saver of the wealth of God’s Word. The good news is we can do the same with our hearts.

“Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
Colossians 3: 1-4 (NIV)

When we decide that we’d rather have Jesus and an eternity with Him in glory, all that we’ve been clinging to, the moth chewed, varmint destroyed, thief stolen things the world affords today don’t seem nearly so valuable, and our hearts? They can now assume the most incomparable position of all, “hidden with Christ in God.” Now that’s the perfect place for our treasure!

Treasure ~ Day 15~ 31 Day Writing Challenge

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” Revelation 21:4 (NLT)

Treasure

As I stepped into the house, the house I hadn’t been in for three months, my house, I was greeted by a host of sorrow and joy. Happily, I was back home where I belonged, but I was grieving too having left my grandsons after being with them for so long. They say that “home is where your heart is.” If that’s true, it explains why my heart feels divided like a puzzle of many pieces.

When I moved to West Virginia for my first teaching job I left part of my heart behind with my family. The home my husband and I have created was made with heart and soul. As our children married and moved away, parts of my heart packed up and left with them. And then there are those grandsons of mine! Each one carries a fragment of my heart tucked in theirs.

A heart pulled in the directions of home, honestly, it leaves me a bit off-kilter with an ever-present sense of yearning. Maybe you know exactly I mean. And as much as we treasure all those we love, having a divided heart can leave us feeling unsettled.

Pondering this, it’s occurred to me that God places that very sense of yearning in our hearts for a purpose. His purpose. If you’re like me, when in one place you long for another. When in another, you wish for somewhere else. The truth God wants us to know is that a divided heart is never satisfied and I’m learning that the desire we feel for home, to be in the presence of love, will not be fulfilled here. We should instead be preparing for a move!

“Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Matthew 6:20-21 (NLT)

“For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.”
Hebrews 13:14 (NLT)

Jesus tells us in John 14 to not let our hearts be troubled. He also assures us that a place is being prepared for us. When we step into the glory of our Father’s house, the Heavenly Host will welcome us with only joy. There’ll be no sorrow, crying, or tears. And that divided heart? It will be made whole, sealed with perfect love. And my friends, we will finally know that we’re Home where we belong!

Little Boxes

Little Boxes

Little boxes stacked up high

Inside, memories of days gone by.

Pictures, letters, report cards, too

Together they tell the story of you.

Bits and pieces of times long past,

Carefully saved to make remembrances last.

A poem, a ribbon, a small round stone

Preserved to go through when we feel alone.

Little boxes stacked up once more

Tucked in the closet, close the door.

Life moves on and then one day

Little boxes, so precious, are thrown away.

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.  Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”  Matthew 6:19-21
